The Horse Center of the Future Is Being Built in Skara

Out on the vast plains of Axevalla, a state-of-the-art equestrian center is now being built that will bring together all forms of equestrian training. Since the 1800s, Skara has been breeding, training, and refining the art of working with the magnificent horse, and last fall, together with its full-service partner Novab, it launched a project aimed at another 200 years of sharing equine knowledge.

Axevalla Horse Center is a new construction project in which the Västra Götaland Region is building a school facility with training stables, box stalls, paddocks, a feed barn, a workshop, and a maintenance building totaling approximately 6,700 square meters on a 7-hectare lot, right next to the Axevalla trotting track, with the goal of completion by the summer of 2024.

While we were setting up the nine booths that Novab had requested, we had the opportunity to walk around the property with the school’s assistant principal, Niclas Dahlqvist, and Novab’s project manager, Jonas Claesson, and learn about their plans.

“We’ve been planning and discussing this project for seven years; it feels liberating in a way that we’re now building an equestrian center that will accommodate all forms of training—as well as innovation and development,” says Niclas Dahlqvist, assistant director at Axevalla Equestrian Center.

Climate-Smart Material Choices

One of the goals of the construction project is to minimize its climate impact as much as possible. Where feasible from a structural and operational standpoint, wood will be chosen over concrete; and where concrete must be used, concrete with a low climate impact will be selected.

– We specialize in building equestrian centers and always focus on creating the very best environments for horse development—from the choice of surroundings right down to bright, spacious stables with easy-to-maintain surfaces. We build with glulam frames from Moelven Töreboda and ensure that the materials we choose are environmentally certified. And we select local suppliers to minimize transportation distances,” says project manager Jonas Claesson at Novab.

See you again! And next time with microphones that work (sorry about the poor sound quality in the video!)
