A Special Project: Wästbygg to Build 102 Svanen-Certified Apartments in Gothenburg
In Kviberg, Gothenburg, Wästbygg 102 Swan-labeled apartments for Bonava, to be ready for move-in at the turn of the year 2023/2024. A project that got us thinking and with the help of Rolftorps Svets & Smides , we set up the sheds up on the hill and, using a really long cable (and a cable reel), we ran power from the other side of the road.
The sun was shining on the construction site, and preparations were in full swing ahead of Thursday’s roof-pouring ceremony when we met with the project’s site manager, Jonathan Axell, who told us about the project’s current status, the challenges they’ve encountered, and what it means for an apartment to be Nordic Ecolabel-certified.
– Among other things, this means that the building materials used are free of substances harmful to health, recycling facilities are built on-site, homes are equipped with energy-efficient appliances, and the units are provided with good insulation. For us, this has meant more planning to ensure the right purchases, and it also means twice as many moisture and environmental inspections. Bonova, the company we’re building for, has been doing this for over 10 years, so a lot of it is already part of our routine,” says Jonathan.
Cabins on the mountain and electricity supplied from the other side of a busy road
There’s a lot that needs to fit on a construction site, and we’re always open to creative solutions. Here, the rock was drilled into and a steel base was cast to support 13 trailers, allowing them to “float” above the rock and the construction site. The electrical work, however, posed an even greater challenge.
– This construction project requires 500 amps, and the nearest substation could only supply us with 63 amps. So we had to go with Plan B and get the power from 300 meters away. “The winding cable route—which runs through the parking lot and along the bike path—is protected by two cable run-over guards. Once we reached the road, we set up a truss bridge, and from there it’s just 50 meters to the fence,” says Andreas Karlsson, electrical installation manager at Renta Region Gothenburg.
That Time the Electrical Cabinet Caught Fire
On another construction site a couple of years ago, a component in one of the main circuit breakers came loose. The result: a construction site without power. Andreas Karlsson remembers it as if it were yesterday:
– Luckily, it was just a fire in the cabinet itself, but I remember my mind and phone were racing—a construction project that comes to a standstill is really expensive.
Jonathan and Wästbygg had everything up and running two hours later and have definitely seen us show our true colors.
– It’s during the challenges that our teamwork is put to the test, and then you can’t help but wonder if Andreas has a secret shortcut between Sisjön and Hisingen, since he got there before the fire department.
