What’s happening in the construction industry in Gothenburg?
The housing projects are back on track. You read that right. Not just one, but several. The inquiries we received this fall have become a reality, and in Gothenburg, construction is underway Wästbygg, Brixly and K21 Construction housing. City of Gothenburg will now feature a brand-new recycling park in Högsbo (formerly known as the recycling center), AstraZeneca is expanding and renovating and Östra Hospital will feature a brand-new maternity and neonatal wing. Of course, there’s much more being built—here’s a sampling of everything that’s happening right now.
The city, with its sideways rain, is bustling; construction sites are popping up everywhere, lunch crowds are gathering, and our machines are running at full speed. Because construction is underway. Again. On behalf of HSB, Wästbygg is now building 58 premium condominiums in Krokslätt. On Mandolingatan in Frölunda, Brixly is now building the fifth and final block, where 527 rental apartments have already been completed and the final 38 rental apartments are now taking shape. In Amhult, Torslanda, K21 Entreprenad is currently building 89 rental apartments for Amhult 2 and has named the block “Hercules.”
“We have three residential construction projects here that are just getting started, and it’s so good to see and hear how more and more projects are now getting back on track. You can see it everywhere,” says Frans Blomberg, sales representative at Renta Göteborg.
A Recycling Park Three Times as Large in 421 Högsbo
You’d better check out the video produced by the City of Gothenburg, because Skeppsviken is involved in this project. Or head over to Alelyckan’s recycling park to get a sense of the scale and purpose of the project. Either way, the new project is still in its infancy, and while we wait for the construction site to be set up, the construction crew has already arrived on-site. A short drive further away, AstraZeneca (or rather, Brixly) is expanding andrenovating its lab facilities. Today’s soup is being delivered right now via our construction elevator, and it feels like half of all our small machines are out here doing their part.
“The future of recycling, with a secondhand store, a bike repair shop, and upcycling. And there’s really no stopping AstraZeneca’s expansion—after all, we have the Sisjöndepån almost right next door,” says Frans.

Second only to Novo in size but first in importance for all future mothers and families, K21 Entreprenad is now building a new maternity and neonatal wing at Östra Sjukhuset. This building will be able to handle 12,500 births per year—that’s 34 babies a day. With its eight floors, everything will be brought together in one place, making this the hub for all childbirth in Gothenburg.
– We’re now setting up 72 workstations here and supporting the contractors with their preferred equipment. It’s exciting to be part of a project that so clearly focuses on the end users of the space. The blueprints show how the midwives’ workflows have been adapted and the importance of being able to move quickly between floors and departments. The interior environment will be characterized by a welcoming atmosphere and a sense of security, says Frans.
Of course, more is being built
The Västlänken project is moving full steam ahead, as is Fixfabriken, along with the tram extension connecting Hisingsbron and Frihamnen —and perhaps we should have, and could have, written even more about them.
“A few customers might raise an eyebrow when they read this article, but I suppose you’ll just write that we’re mentioning a few examples?” Frans concludes.
